A Google Business Profile shows a Budapest café far more often than a café in a country town, but outside Budapest each view is worth more. Across six venues we manage, 1,000 views brought 55-69 calls or directions requests in the countryside, and 21-44 in Budapest. Outside Budapest a good profile can make you the town’s first choice on its own; in Budapest it only gets you in the door.
How is the coffee-seeking guest different outside Budapest and in Budapest?
In Budapest they walk; in the countryside they drive or come on purpose. Google ranks Maps results on relevance, distance and prominence, and in Budapest distance is the strongest of the three. Someone in the city centre typing “specialty coffee” sees places within a few hundred metres, and that circle holds several good cafés.
Outside Budapest the same search covers a whole town. Fewer places, a bigger circle, and what decides is whose profile shows faster that the coffee is good: photos of the bar and the cup, current opening hours, plenty of reviews.
What do the real numbers show?
We looked at the Business Profile statistics of six venues between 10 February and 7 August 2026, as monthly averages: two outside Budapest (including the café-restaurant Retro Caffé in Ajka) and four in Budapest. All of them also ran Google Ads, so look at the differences, not the absolute numbers.
| Place | Views / month | Calls / month | Directions / month | Calls + directions per 1,000 views |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Retro Caffé, Ajka | ~10,100 | ~356 | ~200 | 55 |
| Country restaurant | ~4,600 | ~125 | ~187 | 69 |
| District XIV bakery-bistro | ~46,800 | 0 | ~1,265 | 27 |
| District XVII restaurant | ~18,900 | ~136 | ~281 | 22 |
| District XXI burger place | ~11,400 | ~45 | ~197 | 21 |
| North Pest burger place | ~7,000 | ~67 | ~246 | 44 |
What matters for a café:
- In Budapest the traffic is big, but shared. The District XIV bakery-bistro was seen almost 47,000 times a month and got 1,265 directions requests a month. That’s what a breakfast and brunch place can get in Budapest when it’s at the top of Maps.
- Outside Budapest a view is worth more, up to two or three times as much as at most Budapest places. There’s less choice, and the guest decides sooner.
- Outside Budapest people phone and use Search too. Retro Caffé got about 356 calls a month from its profile, more than any Budapest place. In the countryside 25-45% of views came from Google Search (“café Ajka”); in Budapest only 3-19%.
Why is the profile often enough outside Budapest?
Because far fewer specialty cafés compete in a country town than in a Budapest neighbourhood. If your profile is complete, the photos are about your coffee, and you get reviews regularly, you can be at the top of “café” and “coffee near me” searches without ads.
That doesn’t mean ads have no place in the countryside. Retro Caffé in Ajka ran a Maps campaign of under 30,000 HUF a month next to its profile for two years, and even the small budget brought extra. But outside Budapest the profile carries the load; ads only add to it.
Why isn’t the profile enough in Budapest?
Because the walking guest looks at the first three or four results, and in that circle several places make good coffee. A good-looking profile gets you in the door: without it, even a guest who clicks your ad moves on. But it’s ads that put you in the top three when someone nearby is looking for coffee right now.
How much revenue can the profile bring you?
Work it out with your own numbers: multiply monthly calls and directions requests by how many become guests, and by what a guest spends. You see the calls and directions in your Business Profile statistics.
Monthly calls + directions × share that become guests × average basket = monthly revenue from the profile
An example, with an assumption: one in five calls or directions requests becomes a guest who spends 2,000 HUF. Google doesn’t measure this share, so swap in your own.
- Retro Caffé (countryside, ~556 calls + directions): ~111 guests, about 222,000 HUF a month.
- District XIV bakery-bistro (Budapest, ~1,265): ~253 guests, about 506,000 HUF.
- District XXI burger place (Budapest, ~242): ~48 guests, about 96,000 HUF.
The same channel can mean anything from a hundred thousand to half a million forints a month, depending on where you are and where you stand on Maps. And these guests aren’t your regulars: new people come through the profile, and your coffee turns them into regulars. More on that here.
What do cafés leave on the table?
Outside Budapest: - The phone number and opening hours. If they’re wrong, you lose the best lead: the one who was about to call. - The town name. Many people search “café + town”. You need an accurate address and category to show up there too. - Search. A quarter to a half of views in the countryside come from there. An incomplete profile loses there too.
In Budapest: - The category. The most precise primary category matters: it’s how you compete in specific searches, not just the generic “café”. - The photos. The walking guest decides in two seconds. The cup, the bar and the feel of the place sell the coffee, not the logo. - Ads where they’re needed. If there are several good cafés nearby, the top three is the ads’ job.
What to fix first is in these three tips, and why setting it up once isn’t enough is here.
FAQ
Does a café outside Budapest need Google Ads?
Not always. If the town has few specialty cafés, a well-kept Business Profile can be at the top without ads. Ads pay off if you want more guests than the profile brings on its own, or if competition in the town is growing.
Is a good Business Profile enough in Budapest?
Rarely. In Budapest several cafés compete within a few hundred metres, and the guest chooses from the first three or four places on Maps. A good profile gets you in the door; ads get you into the top three.
How do I know how many guests the profile brings?
Your Business Profile statistics show calls, directions requests and website clicks. Multiply them by roughly how many become guests and what a guest spends. You know your conversion to guests best.
Is the Business Profile worth more outside Budapest or in Budapest?
It pays off in both, differently. In Budapest it reaches more people, but competition is tougher. Outside Budapest fewer people see it, but each view brings more calls and directions requests, up to two or three times as many as at most Budapest places.
